  • Mark Wallington

It is with deep regret that we need to announce that Mark Wallington has passed away. As many of you will know, Mark has been a club stalwart over many years. More recently, he has been instrumental in organising the Friends of Minety lunches that have provided a great opportunity for players past and present to get together in a social setting. He will be sorely missed. His family has asked that they do not receive cards or calls at this difficult time. Mark's funeral was held on 20th January with a small family ceremony.

  • Return to Rugby

The Rugby Football Union (RFU) welcomes the news that Government has given its approval for 15-a-side contact rugby union to return at grassroots level, subject to adaptations. This comes after extensive research and consultations with Government into mitigating the risks of close contact. By using law variations, this will limit the risk of prolonged face-to-face contact, allowing the community game to resume (everything below the Greene King IPA Championship and Allianz Premier 15s). Clubs will be able to begin adapted training from Wednesday 2 December in preparation for local friendly fixtures recommencing from Friday 18 December when the following law variations will come into effect: There will be no scrums or mauls in the game. Instead of a scrum, the game will begin with a free kick. This free kick cannot be taken quickly. A minimum of five and a maximum of seven players from each team are required to form a lineout. A team awarded a penalty or free kick will no longer be able to choose a scrum option. A team awarded a penalty or free kick at a lineout can instead choose another lineout at the same mark. • MTV Rewind

MTV Rewind Saturday 9th May 2020 Last weekend should have been the 2020 Minety 7’s Tournament.  To commemorate the event, here is film from the 2016 Minety’s 7’s tournament. Saturday 2nd May 2020 2nd match of the 2017 / 2018 Wadworth 6 X Dorset and Wilts Division 1 North campaign for Minety as they take on Warminster away from home. 16th September 2017. Saturday 25th April 2020 Time to lift the spirits by revisiting arguably Minety’s finest hour when they travelled to Warminster RFC on Saturday 25th November 2015 to take on Lytchett Minster in the Final of the Dorset and Wilts Vase. Happy Days! Saturday 18th April 2020 Well, it should have been the last match of the season today, a home fixture against Trowbridge.  With the team hitting top format the start of March who knows where Minety would have finished in the table, and what the result against a team that has always caused us problems just when we didn’t want any! So, if you need your fix of Dorset and Wilts league rugby, sit back and enjoy the encounter between the two teams played at Minety on Saturday 27th january 2019. Saturday 11th April 2020 Yet another weekly dose of Minety RFC action.  This week’s MTV Rewind takes us back to Saturday 7th October 2017 when we travelled to Supermarine in Swindon for a D&W1N league match Time to sit back and enjoy and let “MTV Rewind” take you down memory lane! Saturday 4th April 2020 As promised, another weekly dose of Minety RFC action.  Last night (March 3rd) we should have been playing under the lights in a D&W1N match against relegation threatened Chippenham at their all-weather facility.  This week’s MTV Rewind takes us back to November 8th 2019 when we travelled to Chippenham for a mid week Vase match against Warminster Time to sit back and enjoy and let “MTV Rewind” take you down memories’ lane! Saturday 28th March 2020 As promised, your weekly dose of Minety RFC action, and this week we take a stroll back in time to take in a match played by the 2nd XV at Bath Saracens on Saturday 21st April 2018. The match, played largely in excellent spirits, contains one of the best tries of the 2017 – 2018 season. Time to sit back and enjoy and let “MTV Rewind” take you down memories’ lane! Match Report Minety turn on the style. With the 1st XV match conceded by visitors Pewsey Vale, all eyes turned on the 2nd XV’s match away at Bath Saracens in Dorset and Wilts Division 3. The match, played at Oldfields RFC very attractive venue, pitched 6th placed Bath Saracens against 8th placed Minety and gave visiting coach Andy Grayson a chance to look at some of the emerging talent in the 2nd XV. The visitors started the match pushing the Saracens back into their own 22 and dominating the open play, teenage scrum half James Nickson martialling his troops with an assurity which belied his youth and relative inexperience. With hooker Mark Glew’s powerful running in midfield and the dangerous full back Ben Kingston always looking for counter attacking opportunities, Minety applied pressure across the pitch but were unable to find a way through Saracens’ well organised defence. Veteran 2nd row Phil Ward was dominant at the back of the line out and Minety enjoyed quality ball so it was something of a surprise that they failed to open the scoring before the 27th minute. A series of rucks near the Saracens line ended with the dangerous Glew taking the ball at pace and slicing through the defence for the first try.  NIckson’s long range conversion was a success and Minety led 7-0. Minety doubled their lead 4 minutes later with one of the tries of the season.  From a scrum just outside of his own 22, Nicksen picked up the ball and dummied the Saracens’ defence before streaking clear, side stepping the full back and toughing down beneath the posts.  His conversion sailed between the uprights and Minety led 14-0. Glew scored his 2nd, and Minety’s 3rd try from a forwards’ pushover just before half time as coach Grayson made a number of changes, experimenting with players playing in unaccustomed positions. With both teams making full use of bench players in the very hot sunshine, Minety started the 2nd half 19-0 up. They wrapped up the 4 try bonus point in the 48th minute.  Nickson fed replacement fly half Dave Cooke.  His long pass was caught by centre Bram Coleman, whose flicked pass set Garin Garland in for a try near the posts.  Coleman kicked the conversion to put the visitors 26 points clear. In the energy sapping conditions, it was great credit to both teams for the high pace that the game was played at. Despite the score line, Saracens continued to play open, attacking rugby and richly deserved their opening try in the 63rd minute.  After a fluent backs’ move along the line, play switched in field and a clever “grubber” kick through the Minety line allowed the home side’s inside centre to touch down under the posts. Minety hit back with some forceful running from the powerful Gareth Thomas but it was the home side who scored next with a fine “length of the pitch” try involving 6 players before the scrum half touched down beneath the posts.  The successful conversion brought the scores back to 26-14. All chances of an unlikely comeback were halted 2 minutes later when centre Del Murray cleverly picked his way through the home defence to score under the posts. The 6th Minety try came in the 77th minute when the impressive Kingston broke through to touch down, Coleman converting to end the match 40-14 in Minety’s favour. Coach Grayson was delighted with the performance of the whole squad but singled out James Nickson for particular praise after a Man of the Match performance. Minety’s win lifts them into 7th place in the league with one fixture remaining of the season against champions Corsham. In Division 1, Minety’s home walkover and Warminster’s defeat at home to Avonvale mean that the village side lie 4 points behind Warminster with two matches in hand in the fight for 4th place in the league. Missing your fix of rugby already; gently going “stir fry” crazy? It wont fill the gap entirely, but Minety RFC are now launching “MTV Rewind”, a chance to see some classics from the archive that we’ve built up over more years than any of us care to remember. Each week we’ll publish the MTV coverage of a match from the archives (well, if BT Sports and Sky Sports can get away with it, so can we) and, if copy is still available, the match report. Rewind 1. It’s back to Saturday 9th September 2017 and the first match of the 2017 / 2018 season as Minety travel to Pewsey Vale looking to get their season off to winning start. And once you’ve watched it, here’s the match report. Claxton inspires Minety to opening day win New Minety captain Tom Claxton saw his team open their Wadworth 6X Dorset and Wilts Division 1 campaign with a fine 29-14 victory at Pewsey Vale on Saturday. On a beautifully prepared pitch, Minety dominated the early exchanges as the forwards held a powerful Pewsey pack and the pacey Minety backs ran at the home team’s line. Against the run of play, Pewsey took the lead in the 9th minute.  A speculative kick into the Minety 22 took a wicked bounce and full back Duncan Simpson was clattered to the ground as he tried to pick up.  The loose ball was seized upon and the try awarded close to the posts. Centre Tom Windle was denied a try in the 13th minute by a last second clearance after a clever kick from fly half Adam Watts wrong footed the Pewsey defence. Minety opened their account with a fine opening try in the 20th minute.  A solid scrum on the half way line allowed scrum half Garin Garland to feed Watts who passed to right winger Ben Langridge.  From the ruck, Simpson broke the line and fed left winger Dave Cooke, who side stepped the full back and ran in to score under the posts. Garland’s conversion was successful and the match was tied at 7 all. Minety’s 2nd try came in the 32nd minute.  A lineout steal in their own half led to a break from No. 8 Andrew Hibbard.  Garland kicked ahead and when the ball was won at the ruck centre Dave Church and Windle combined to allow the latter to score wide on the right. The score galvanised the home team, who proceeded to play some of their best rugby, pushing the visitors back onto their own line.  A Pewsey score seemed inevitable when Garland was yellow carded but somehow the 14 men of Minety held out to half time. With flanker Josh Bull imperious at the lineout and the pack, with Mark Glew and Colin French, in fine form, Minety controlled the start of the second half. Garland extended Minety’s lead in the 50th minute with a penalty after the home team were penalised for not releasing after a tackle. Pewsey mounted attack after attack on the visitors’ line, only for each wave to be repelled by some immense tackling from Ben Collins, Matt Chisholm, Church and Bull in particular. Pewsey’s 2nd try came at the end of another concerted series of attacks.  The successful conversion brought the scores to 15-14 in the visitors’ favour and set up a breathless last quarter. Both sides pushed for the victory and play moved around the pitch at breakneck speed. The match was settled in the 79th minute when Simpson picked up in midfield and ran in to score from 30 metres, Garland converting the try. The “4 try bonus point” was secured deep into injury time.  Minety won a Pewsey scrum in their own half, Garland drove forward before slipping the ball to Bull who capped a fine performance by running in the try from 35 metres. Garland’s conversion ended the match with Minety 29-14 victors. New Minety coach Andy Grayson was delighted with the performance.  “We all fronted up and I was delighted with the commitment the lads showed.  It was a great squad performance with a number of 2nd team players stepping up and showing their qualities.  It’s onwards and upwards as we prepare for Warminster next week.”

Yes, after several weeks without either camera, we are back in action covering last Saturday’s encounter between Melksham and Minety at Melksham’s marvellous new facility on the edge of the town.  The match was filmed from high up on the main stand, which has both advantages and disadvantages.  The advantages are that lines of play can be picked out easily; the disadvantage was that it was very blustery and although I have tried to keep wind noise down to a minimum, it still intrudes. The failure of both cameras meant that no film was shot of the recent match against Devizes (18th February) but in its stead is “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly” feature from the Chippenham match.  These are available on the DVD’s of each game but, for copyright reasons relating to the accompanying music, are not available on line.  For the Chippenham match I have substituted the orginal music for some copyright free music. Under 4 minutes in length, it shows some of the best bits of the match from a Minety perspective, some in slow motion. 2016 / 2017 Dorset and Wilts Division 1 North League Match featuring Chippenham v. Andy Brown will be the Referee Co-Ordinator for the upcoming season. Finance. Accounts have been filed with Companies House but will result in a fine for being late. Clarity is required with some of the details provided by the Junior Section. TC has contacted Kevin Holdway with regards to handover. TC proposed amalgamating accounts to make things easier to manage. AG suggested commissioning Judy Brown to Audit accounts. TC to provide a list of Payers and a financial summary each month. DM outlined plans to raise funds to buy new kit through the sale of sponsorship boards, events and advertising. COVID. The present COVID restrictions leave things very doubtful as to when we might be able to play. The RFU have outline plans in place for the new season but there are a lot of dependencies. We need to make sure we comply with the RFU COVID guidelines to ensure we are not penalised or lose our insurance. As most of our costs are associated with playing games so we will avoid expenditure due to the delay in the start of the season. We will also avoid costs on paying for a Sports Therapist until we have an idea when contact rugby will resume. We can now play Touch rugby which is a minor improvement and should help with maintaining interest for retention & recruitment purposes. We still need to collect subscriptions to cover fixed costs. COVID guidelines are still in place for social gatherings but there should be enough space to accommodate events around the clubhouse if the weather remains fair. Facilities and equipment. DM is looking at playing kit and other merchandise. Orders will be taken for a ‘bundle’ with payment collected upfront. Sponsorship will be sought to reduce overall cost. Players to buy their own shorts & socks. Spare bobble hats to be given to BS. It is believed that Andrew Hibbard currently has them. Big discussion on ties. Proposal to have three new ties – 50+ appearance ties, standard club ties and 50th year anniversary ties. AO and DM to liaise. BS said that Mrs Scott will prepare match day food although not every week. BS to create a rota. Pitches – hard and cracked due to the weather. The weather this year has prevented any major works from taking place. The grass has been cut and the pitches look fine although we may have an opportunity to do something in the Autumn if the season is delayed. Work Parties are required to help the groundsman with erecting the lighting towers, repairing the shed etc. DM to send something out. AG requested funds to purchase strength and conditioning equipment – medicine balls, heavy passing balls etc. Estimate of cost to be sent to TC. Coaching and Playing. Currently concentrating on strength & conditioning with social distancing maintained. Groups split into forwards & backs. Numbers turning up for training have been good. BS suggested training twice a week. AG said that usually one session would be reactive to work on what happened in the previous match and the second session is proactive and looked at the game plan for the next match. Some discussion around the feasibility of this with a preference to have a set ‘one club session’ and then an optional session so that the resources are not split in such a way that we are not able to have a proper training session at all. Pre-season matches – an inter club Chairman’s match would be a good social event and fundraising opportunity plus maybe a local game against Cricklade rather than going too far afield. AG volunteered to help coach the U10s on an ad hoc basis following a request for support from Edward Wolton. Social. Proposal to have steak night after the RWB match at the Royal Wootton Bassett but we would need to confirm how many they can accommodate. The new sub-committee (DC, JT, SH) are looking to run two events each month. Ladies night, Xmas Do, Beer Festival, Annual Dinner and 7s are all on the agenda. Golf day was well attended and worked well. The aim is to promote participation through social media to help with getting players to training and attending events. Next year marks the 50th Anniversary of the Club so we need to plan early to mark this occasion. A sub committee needs to be formed which will include ex-players. The intention is to have a big event including dinner, dance & disco with extended invites to help cover costs and get people involved. Safeguarding. We need to ensure that the crowd barriers are put up on match days prior to the game as part of the preamble and taken down when the match finishes. Ambulance access to top fields is ongoing. AO Any Other Business. Fundraising – suggestion to sell scratch cards or have a 50/50 draw after each match. Income could also be increased through beer sponsorship following selected matches. TC suggested a special 50th Anniversary Tour which would need another sub-committee to bring together. Starting to organise early should help because recent tours have failed to materialise. PMc to look at the Articles of Association and the structure of the Limited Company to clarify roles. AG to track and recover keys from the most recent Chairmen. Next meeting 2nd September 2020 at 19:00.

  • 2019/20 Coaches Review

2019 / 2020 Minety RFC Coach, James Irving, has been busy putting together his assessment of the season and combining it with his “Most Improved Player” and “Coach’s Player of the Season” awards.  Without further ado, let’s let James do the talking:

  • Fixture Update

This statement, from South West Rugby: The fixtures due to be played on the 26th September have already been moved to the 12th December. If the season is able to start on the 7th November it will commence with the week 6 fixtures moved from the 31st October. This decision has been taken as originally the 7th November was due to be a reserve week. We read this to be if we retart the league on Nov 7th our 1st game will be Sutton Benger away. The Fixture list for 2020/21 has been updated to reflect these changes. Click here.

  • Dave Cooke presentation

“Clubs such as Minety Rugby Football Club rely on volunteers and I think that it is vital that they should be recognised and rewarded,” said Chairman, Andrew Grayson.

  • RFU moves to Stage D on Roadmap to Return

The progression to Stage D on the Return to Rugby Roadmap means that limited and adapted contact activity can now be included in a training session and inter-club Touch/Ready4Rugby fixtures are allowed. The document (which can be downloaded through this link) explains permitted and non-permitted activity within Stage D. This is an extension of the overall guidance outlined in the Return to Community Rugby Guidance.Clubs must continue to work within these guidelines to ensure that all facility, pre-activity and other general operation practices are safe and appropriate.
