Swindon II 12pts – Minety 22pts
Minety 1st team coach Andy Ward declared himself delighted with their 22 – 12 victory at Swindon II’s in the Dorset and Wilts Division 1 North clash at Swindon on Saturday.
“We were desperately short of 1st team regulars and a number of others had to play out of position but we held off a determined Swindon team and put in a superb performance in a very tough game,” said Ward after the match.
Swindon attacked in waves during the opening 20 minutes of the match and it was only down to some great tackling and defensive work that the Minety team kept their opponents out.
Minety opened the scoring after Max Sparrow broke through the Swindon line, off loading to makeshift full back Dave Cooke who held off his opposing full back before touching down to put the away team 5 points to the good in the 26th minute. Swindon hit back in the last three minutes of the half with a try of their own to bring the teams in at 5 – 5 at half time.
The turning point in the match came in a devastating 5 minute period at the start of the second half. After Ashley Windle kicked a Minety penalty, Will North crashed through for a try, his second in two matches. With Windle adding the conversion, Minety had raced into a 15 – 5 lead before Stephen Brown sliced through the Swindon defences to score Minety’s third try almost from the kickoff. With Windle converting the try, Swindon found themselves 22 – 5 down.
Both teams lost players to the sin bin in the second half but Minety’s line held resolute until a late Swindon try and conversion left the final score 22 – 12 to Minety.
Captain Wallace Hibb described the away team’s performance as “outstanding”. “We put in some great tackles in the crucial first 10 minutes and never gave up. I’m really proud of the lads,” he said after the game.
The result means that Minety consolidate their 4th place in the league, just one point behind third placed Coombe Down.
