Swashbuckling seconds pound Pewsey
Dorset & Wilts Division 3 North
Pewsey Vale 2nd XV nil – Minety 2nd XV 59pts
Putting last week’s disappointment behind them, a rampant Minety second team completely overwhelmed their counterparts at Pewsey Vale.
The home side started strongly but robust tackling by Minety kept them from taking an early lead.
As the match went on, the visiting pack grew in strength and confidence. Dominating the set pieces, they secured a steady flow of lineout ball and won almost every scrum.
The scoring started when the Minety forwards drove a five metre scrum over the line and scrumhalf Andy Brown pounced on the ball for a try.
Andy Edwards kicked the conversion and it wasn’t long before the whole scenario was repeated once more. Pewsey conceded a penalty seven metres out, Minety chose a scrum and again forced the home side back over their line. This time it was number 8 Sean Richards who touched down to make it 0-12.
Inside centre Callam House smashed through the Pewsey back line to score his first try and hooker Matt Park stole lineout ball to crash over for his. Two more conversions from Edwards made it 0-26 at the break.
Minety put Pewsey under further pressure in the second half and it wasn’t long before Rich Fisher sped over for a try in the corner from a quickly taken penalty.
The home team fought back but courageous tackling from Michael Scott held them up over the line. Showing how it should be done, Scott then sprinted through for a try of his own at the other end of the field.
Running impressively, House scored two further tries but it was flanker Oliver Bown who capped the day for Minety, breaking tackles and crashing through the defence to score Minety’s ninth and final try of the game.
Four second-half conversions from Edwards brought his team’s tally to 59 points. Minety’s Man of the Match, though, was tight-head prop Dan Dickens whose outstanding rucking and counter-rucking ensured a sure supply of quick ball throughout the game.
