Melksham v Minety

Saturday 22 September 2012

Dorset & Wilts 1st XV Plate

Minety pay for a slow start

Melksham 1st XV 41pts – Minety 1st XV 17pts

Minety coach Huw Jones gives his report on the game…

Really flat warm-up. I warned the boys what the outcome would be of having no bounce in the warm-up. The result, as predicted, was a really poor first 30 minutes. Our defence was disorganised, we didn’t push up and we missed tackles left, right and centre.

Then the comeback: back to basics!

Finally we got our defence organised. As soon as we began to exert pressure, Melksham began to turn over ball. We won a quick ruck, got away a couple of passes and suddenly Luke Radcliff found himself in a bit of space. Two hand-offs and a try under the sticks. He also converted his own try.

We were then awarded a penalty after exerting consistent pressure on their 10 metre line. Quick ball out and a kick through from Tom Fitzcharles. An organised four-man chase but pressure on their last man and with the ball bouncing about we got hold of it only for our support runner to be pulled back by the shirt. Result: penalty to Minety and Melksham down to 14 men for 10 minutes. Luke Radcliffe slotted the goal.

Our second try came in the second half after two quick rucks and then quick hands. Tom Fitzcharles came on a short angle and split the defenders. They couldn’t recover and he rounded the fullback to dot down under the posts after running a full 60 metres.

Last quarter of an hour we fell away a bit but tried to play rugby for the full 80.

Ultimately we were let down by the first 30 minutes.
