Saturday’s brilliant win over Warminster was the stand out result of the weekend in Dorset and Wilts Division 1. To beat a quality outfit like Warminster is good but to inflict their biggest defeat and only shut out of the season thus far is remarkable and bodes well for Tom Claxton’s side as they begin the second half of the season.
Combe Down continue to pile on the points with a huge win away from home at Swindon while Bradford maintained the pressure at the top of the table with a close win at Chippenham. Last year’s promoted team, the well organised Avonvale outfit took full advantage of Warminster’s loss with a 22-0 shut out of Trowbridge and now leapfrog Warminster into 3rd place.
Elsewhere, the improving Pewsey Vale overcame our closest rivals, Royal Wootton Bassett in a high scoring game.
Next Saturday Minety travel to Royal Wootton Bassett looking for maximum points to keep tabs with the top teams in the league, all of whom would appear to have winnable matches against teams towards the lower end of the table. Claxton and coaches Andy Grayson and Hywel Rees know that Minety will have to avoid a similar slip up to the ones that cost them so dearly before Christmas away at Trowbridge and home against Melksham where valuable points were lost. It is worth noting that had Minety won both of those encounters with a similar score to the one against Warminster they would be right on the coat-tails of Bradford!
The 2nd XV were not playing last Saturday but return to league action next Saturday away at Trowbridge.
