Seconds edge close game
Devizes 3rd XV 23pts - Minety 2nd XV 26pts
Minety
seconds narrowly won a close-fought encounter which was seriously
marred by a worrying neck injury to a Devizes player that necessitated
his being airlifted to hospital.
The Minety pack were in good form and when number 8 Ian
Illingworth broke from the back of a ruck on Devizes’ 22, he was
able to muscle his way through the remaining cover for a try.
Flyhalf Andy Edwards missed the conversion but was successful with a
subsequent penalty goal attempt. When the home team infringed again,
Edwards struck the resulting penalty well but this time clipped the
post so that the ball bounced back into play. Following up the kick,
winger Miles Murphy was able to gather the ball and touch it down for a
try in the corner. This time, Edwards’ conversion kick was bang
on target.
Devizes, meanwhile, had shown themselves masters of the driving maul.
They carved out three good tries of their own in the first half so that
the score stood level on 15 points apiece at the break.
The home team added another try and a penalty goal in the second half
while Minety benefited from a drop goal by fullback Andy Cook and a try
by winger Jason Cole, who beat two players to score.
That left the two sides even again before Edwards settled the matter in
Minety’s favour with a sweetly taken drop goal from outside the
22.
This Saturday, Minety seconds travel away to take on Aldbourne/Hungerford.
