Minety subdue Sutton Benger
Sutton Benger 2nd XV 5pts - Minety 2nd XV 20pts
Playing away from
home on a grey and rainy afternoon, Minety seconds defied the drizzle
to run in three tries and kick a conversion and a penalty goal to beat
Sutton Benger seconds. Their hosts’ only riposte was a late try.
Sutton Benger were first into their
stride and dominated the opening period of the game. That changed once
Minety began to assert themselves and when Will Howse charged at the
home defence, he looked certain to score. He barged his way over the
line but a late tackle popped the ball out of his hands. Scrumhalf Andy
Brown was on hand to snatch up the unlooked for pass, though, and he
touched down for the opening score, which flyhalf James Tweedale
subsequently converted.
Minety’s second try came after
Sean Richards, who had an outstanding game for them at number 8, picked
up from the back of a scrum and attacked the blind side. He made 30
metres before slipping a short pass to centre Dave Hix, who lined up
with winger Jason Cole outside him to take on the remaining two
defenders. Hix beat his man and then popped the ball to Cole who
scurried up the touchline for a try in the corner.
Sutton Benger were penalised for
hands in the ruck just before half time and Tweedale was able to kick a
goal from the resulting penalty to give Minety a 15 point lead at the
break.
Skipper Pete Hazell had an excellent
afternoon for Minety at flanker. His pack stole a lot of their
opponents’ ball at the front of the lineout and dominated the set
scrums.
Minety had a set-back in the second
half when one of their players was yellow-carded for retaliation but
they still added to their points tally thanks to a try from Tweedale
who took the last pass from a lengthy move that started with a driving
maul from a lineout.
Sutton Benger took advantage of their man advantage to run in a try, but that was their only score of the afternoon.
The win takes
Minety seconds up to second place in Dorset and Wiltshire Division 3
North, nicely setting up this Saturday’s away confrontation with
league leaders Wootton Bassett thirds.
