Dorset & Wilts 2nd XV Shield
Mismatch
Bridport 2nd XV 52pts - Minety 2nd XV 0pts
Match abandoner after 25 minutes
An
understrength Minety second team found themselves considerably
overmatched by a fit young Bridport side in the first round of the
Dorset and Wiltshire 2nd XV Shield. The game was abandoned after only
25 minutes, by which time Minety had been reduced to 12 men by injury
while Bridport had already scored 52 points.
The 15 Minety players who made the 140 mile journey to Bridport were
mostly forwards, earnest scrummagers to a man but somewhat
inexperienced in the subtler arts of the three-quarter line. Their
opponents soon discovered their weakness and lost little time in
running round them on their way to a series of early tries.
The visitors’ cause was further undermined by the loss of skipper
Pete Hazell with a shoulder injury and the departure of Steve Murray in
an ambulance with what looked like (but, thankfully, proved
subsequently not to be) a serious spinal injury.
Acting skipper Andy Brown warned the referee that if they lost any more
players, they would have to concede the game, little realising that he
would be the next to go, having badly broken his nose in a clash of
heads with one of his team-mates.
Bridport were duly awarded the tie and consoled their visitors with the
best catering and the warmest post-match hospitality they have
encountered for several seasons.
Minety seconds hope to return to full
strength and better form as they travel away to take on Marlborough
seconds in the league this Saturday.
