On a
cold and windy November afternoon, the Minety and Calne second teams
battered each other to a standstill in a bruising league encounter that
saw no points scored but lacked nothing in tension or drama.
Calne’s large pack dominated the set pieces and won the
lion’s share of possession throughout the game. Their failure to
turn this superiority into points came from a combination of their own
poor decision-making at critical moments and their opponents’
never-say-die commitment to defence. Some of Minety’s first-up
tackling could have been better but the depth and spirit of their
defensive line were peerless and ensured that no one broke through all
afternoon.
Calne came close to scoring several times, though, especially in the
first half when they even drove over the Minety line and touched down.
That try was disallowed for a prior infringement, however, and Minety
were able to clear their lines.
The visitors scuffed a couple of drop goal attempts but the home
side’s tactical kicking was excellent. They also looked dangerous
on the break, but most of their attacks were launched from deep in
their own half, making it hard for them to score.
Play ebbed and flowed in the final 15 minutes but neither side could
make the breakthrough and, with the light all but gone, the game ended
in an honourable draw.
This Saturday, Minety seconds make a pilgrimage to the south coast to
take on old friends and rivals Bridport in the Dorset & Wilts
Second XV Shield.
