Minety capitalise on Chippenham’s errors
Chippenham 2nd XV 10pts - Minety 1st XV 36pts
Chippenham made a good start but were not able to contain their
sprightly visitors from Minety. Behind at half-time, the villagers drew
away after the break, pouncing on spilt ball and punishing their
opponents’ errors with a blitz of tries.
Flyhalf Tim Vaughan opened Minety’s account following a
passing move that took ball to the right touchline. Vaughan was there
to take a final inside pass and angled off for a try by the posts.
Chippenham responded with an assault by their skilful pack. Good
support and short, rapid passes took them through the visitors’
defence for a well-worked try of their own. A try in the corner from
their inside centre then gave the home side a narrow lead at the
interval.
The visitors upped the pace in the second half and when they won
lineout ball on halfway, they fed it wide to outside centre Aran
Lightfoot. His lightning speed took him past all defenders for a score
by the corner flag.
A catch-and-drive from a lineout posed further problems for Chippenham.
Minety drove the maul 15 metres before lock David Hazell broke lose and
slipped the ball to scrumhalf Max Sparrow, who dived over for a try.
Winger Ryan Dowling contributed a brace of tries, his first coming from
an interception when the home side had an overlap and looked certain to
score. His 60 metre dash was followed by another piece of skilful
opportunism as Minety once more pilfered Chippenham’s ball.
Dowling rounded his man and skittered in for a try in the corner.
When the home team spilled possession on half way, Sparrow instantly
hacked it away. Kicking on, he pursued the ball almost to the line
before neatly gathering it and diving over for his second try of the
afternoon.
The victory extended Minety’s unbeaten run in the league to four
games. They remain top of the table. This Saturday they play hosts to
Wootton Bassett seconds.
